Vermont’s First Santa Run

A sea of Santas poured down Church Street on Sunday during Ri Ra’s 5K Santa Run & Walk. More than 1200 participants pounded the pavement uniformed in red and white.

“It was nice to have everyone on the same level playing field. We weren’t there to worry about the time or the wind drag,” says runner Christina Shuma who enjoyed being part of a mass who was being collectively cheered on by onlookers. “It wasn’t individual. It was ‘Go Santas!”

Despite the matching dress, some still found ways to distinguish themselves. One woman ran with dogs dressed as Santa’s reindeer. Another man finished the race with a child on his shoulders, also dressed as a miniature Santa.

Although Santa races have been occurring for years in states like Nevada and Massachusetts, this was the first Santa race Vermont has ever had, which might be surprising for a state that sells bumper stickers saying ‘Keep Vermont Weird.’

“I don’t know why Vermont has never had the Santa race before. This is the kind of state a Santa race is designed for,” said onlooker Ross Sheehan.

By the end of race, beards were being worn as neck warmers and Santa suits were half open, but spirits were soaring as many crossed the finish line in groups holding joined hands high.

“It was amazing to be apart of something that was new to Vermont,” says Shuma. “And it’s a nice way to kickoff the holiday season.”
